Perhaps!
This is an e-mail I got from Mike and I'm reposting it here for all those curious about what Mike is up to:
Hello friends!
so first things first if you'd like to send me anything, the address is:
BAyUP - Mike Downey
c/o CityTeam Ministries
722 Washington Street
Oakland, CA 94607
We are currently at the Oakland Library near Lake Meritt and I have 20 minutes of computer time before it logs me out.
We moved into CityTeam on saturday (yesterday) and are still just settling in and getting situated. We spent the first week having training and studies and such with all the students participating in BAyUP this summer.
We're still figuring out exactly what we're doing here at CityTeam but I think we have a little better idea now. For those that don't know, the men in the program at CityTeam are there for drug/alcohol recovery and it's a year-long program. These guys are also the ones you run everything else that CityTeam does, like feeding and housing around 60 people every night.
One of the things that we'll be doing is helping tutor the guys in math because they also have certain educational advancements that they have to make in order to graduate from the program (which in some cases is court ordered). We'll also be helping out with the bible studies and sitting in on a lot of the recovery classes. There's some sort of summer camp children's thing that I think we're gonna be spending a lot of time with...but I'm still a little fuzzy on that. They're pretty flexible so we can pretty much just fill in wherever else we would like to. Helping cook meals, wash dishes, help with food distribution, setup and take down commodations for the homeless, etc.
So far the guys seem really cool, and that's just after a few short conversations with them. It's pretty obvious that their lives are drastically transformed after only a few months in the program, and that's because they've accepted Christ. However, chemical addiction is still a really powerful thing.
Okay, maybe I'll have more time later to send something out. Bye!
In Christ,
Michael
ps: I couldn't get into my excel file to find all the email addresses, so if you want to forward this to people, please do. Hopefully I will be able to do that soon. Also, let me know who you forward it to so I don't repeat. thanks!
